The legend of St Ives is that of an Irish virgin saint who as a missionary in the 5th century crossed the channel from Ireland on an ivy leaf. The 15th century parish church is named after St La its Irish saint and is built over her grave.

St Ives, which received its town charter in 1295 from King Edward, is best known for its artistic community. It is a pretty area made up of fisherman’s cottages along cobble streets with granite quays, which easily attract the artistic eye. Those who like to watch artists at work will not be disappointed especially in the harbour area where many can be found painting the beautiful landscape. Exhibitions to meet all taste abound. In 1993 St Ives got its own Tate Gallery which was created to show contemporary works by the many artists associated with St Ives and the surrounding areas.

With its clear blue waters and golden sands the area has long been a popular holiday location. The arrival of the Great Western Railways in 1877 increased its popularity. One of the bonuses of St Ives is that it enjoys a sub tropical climate due to the Gulf Stream. Hence plants grow all year and so it is not surprising to learn that St Ives has won Britain in Boom four times. This event is wholeheartedly supported by the community who display hanging baskets, boxes and freestanding displays which enhance the natural beautiful of the area.
